Line Array

Weekend of the 30/07/2005 finally got all the drivers and mdf cut (see note below).

Just follow process/pics below ...

NBS01

NBS02

These are quite small but 17 per side should give enough “Uuumph

I was hoping to simply flush mount unit but the lip prevented that. So I cheated and got my friendly CnC man to machine the 34 openings with small rebate plus recess for connection plate.

At the same time he cut all the panels required to size.

NBS04

I had hoped that’d saved me any router work but placing speaker into cutout revealed almost no rear space for speaker to “breath”. See spider above.

I saw this suggestion in a woodworking mag recently. The bungy straps help to give the vacuum pipe some movement.

I moved my drop saw to give myself a bit of room to do the chamfered routing.

NBS05

Now drivers have some space to “breath” at rear of baffle

The next three pics are actually a “dry screw” run, about 70 in all. I then unscrewed, glued and re-screwed the cabinet back together

YourTruly

Yours truly, I always cut baffles 5-10 mm to large and flush trim them for a perfectly smooth finish. However the dust is a nightmare and dangerous - so I dust sheet up and wear a respirator.

The Triton powered respirator has a good clear visor, pumps air well through the helmet but would be nice if it had a bit more pressure. Overall though it’s certainly work the cost (AU$250)

And finally ready for auditioning, tweaking etc, etc. No ports yet but holes cut for 3 per side, turn the wick up and there is a fair amount of air pushed out the openings.

InPlaceRight

On initial listening the NBS’s are very good on mid range stuff and vocals. Highs and lows obviously have limitations.

Those are 75 mm long 50 mm dia ports at my feet. They didn’t do much and stuffed sounded about the same??? I think thing sound better just with the 3 openings in the back left simply “open”.

I’ve thrown most types of music at these things over the last few days and must admit I haven’t been able to phase them. I wouldn’t say they are ultra hi fi but are certainly a “fun” listen.

ArraySideTweetersArrays early Oct 05; I knew once I went public everyone would say “stack tweeters above one another” - so I did. These are only US$15 units so do not hit ultra highs. I can not get those crash cymbals shimmering like I get out of the Seas “millenniums” but they cost 10 times more!

I’m using a basic second order crossover I tried 3 Kh, 3.5 kh and 4 kh points by ear?? and the higher seems more neutral to me.

Feet; I made some “half pyramid” outriggers to help with stability. If these do go to my brother he has a couple of dozy British bull dogs who will no doubt try to nudge them out of their way.
