Materials

This is a really easy one - plywood or MDF for cabinets. Natural wood expands and contracts over time/weather conditions, this would loosen/break joints. This would be detrimental if we are making a “seal box” and loose joints would effect the rigidity of the structure which would have an effect on the sound. Also natural timber may have varying density which could effect the performance of the cabinet.

Now we get into the subjective - ply or mdf? This is like the argument about whether cables have a sound. School A; says mdf because its structurally stable and dense - School B says mdf “kills” the sound and ply has more character, ply is physically stronger and lighter.

Most of my cabinets have been made of mdf only because it’s (A) cheaper and (B) I am more in School A and I have yet to build the same cabinet in both materials to do a comparison. Until I have done a audible comparison, I really wouldn’t argue the toss on this one - the choice is yours.
