CyBurg’s NeedleSo, I finally got around to building the little Needles http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=47403&highlight=Cyburgs+needle Here’s the basic details posted by Berndt ..
I was in two minds whether to show the above picture because you can see my BIG mistake. On the day I was routing out the driver openings I was also chasing a wild turkey around my garden as it dug up everything to make a nest for it’s mate. So my attention was not really on the job, hence I cut the holes 100 mm to low. Opps - as this project is using off cuts hanging around the shed I smiled!! and reach for another off cut. Then I thought, hell no one will eventually see this (but you) after it’s veneered - so I bogged the cutouts back in Sound ... I’d forgotten what these little Tangband W3-871S’s sounded like so when I put them in their new boxes and set them to play I was a little disappointed. Hey, hold on Phil, your listening to single 3” drivers costing less than US$19.00. Actually I’m playing Sgt Pepper at the moment and they are very listen-able. And the Needles do help in the lower register. Within their limitations these units don’t do too much wrong. These would definitely be a small room/system setup, you can not get a lot of air moving with a 3” driver so high volumes are not really an option. I preferred running them without my sub woofer switched on as it “overpowered” the overall presentation. Currently, I still prefer my Fostex FE126e’s ... however seem final comments on page 2 FinishedOkay, so here’s the final result, sliced pacific maple veneer with 4 coats of polyurethane finish. I had a couple of old spray cans hanging around so used them up on the job.
During preparation of the boxes for the veneer I spotted something???? With little drives like these, there is very little room between the driver itself and the opening in the MDF. Which means the rear has little space to breath. Have a guess what I forgot - yep ... I usually chamfer off the rear opening to help air flow from the rear of the driver - you can see this on most of my other projects. I don’t think there is such a thing as an inverted chamfer bit for a router!, so I dropped a bearing onto my rebating bit and used it to put a rebate on the internal edge of the opening - fixed. Now why am I admitting to yet another cock-up - well this may be psychological but I think! this has helped the sound of these speakers. On plugging back into the system they sound more open, less congested and easier to listen to - I like them even more now. 05/11/06: - I found a pot of poly hiding in the Shed corner last week - so added a n extra brushed coat which has added to the overall finish as below ....
Now those CAOW1’s (Denis Murphy) sit rather high on those HT stands but tweeters are at ear level for my office chair [see other pages for these and sub details].
Nice to get a good rap from the originator ....,
