Room Acoustics

Like most people I do not have the ideal listening room. In fact it definitely has thing against it: -

  • Hard laminate floor - although I do have a rug in front of the speakers
  • Not a lot of soft furniture in the room
  • A lot of window area - blinds not heavy curtains
  • Very light weight stud wall construction - no insulation ??
  • Odd shaped room - L shaped but with open areas and a long open corridor off the room.

Materials

AccousticMats

1200 X 430 X 90 thick Acoustic insulation bats. I have a white “backing” material to close the back and light cotton material (coloured) to cover fronts and side.

Double panel - two bats wide

Technique ... staple one long side. Stand on that edge and clip other three, ready for stapling.

This was the first panel I installed. By trial and error moving it around the room to it’s possile 5 locations this had the most effect on basic reverb’ damping.

Before starting I bought myself a little cheap air powered stapler - that has made the whole job a lot easier - highly recommended if you are doing a similar project.

Panels 2 & 3 installed; left panel shorter do to power outlets below it.

I installed 5 double panels, basically on front and back walls. A couple of weekends later I made a couple of single panels for the corners. I was still surprised at the subtle effect each had.
