The Cerberus

This project was to replace a “computer sub” I was using in my office along with the excellent CAOW1’s. The Peerless mid/bass move quite a lot of air so do not need a huge sub in a small room.

This is a direct build of Roman Bednarek’s design and for details and other excellent projects see - http://www.rjbaudio.com/Cerberus/cerberus.html

The port flare looks a lot better in real life. The box was finished with bits of spare Silky Oak veneer that needed jointing within the panel widths, I wasn’t to worried about this, or the final look of the port flare as the box will “live” under my office desk. In fact I didn’t have enough veneer on hand to bother about the base.

Result’s

Well the small Tang Bang certainly uses the large xmax it has and the cone moves hell of a lot. I was wondering if the 70 watt amp would be sufficient but I have it cranked at less that a quarter. The cone movement scares the begeebus out of me and I wouldn’t want to rev it too high - but I’m a wimp in these matters and I suspect the TB could take a heavy load.

This is a great little subwoofer for small rooms and I would thoroughly recommend the design - thanks Roman.

I couldn’t resist trying the sub in my large listening room with my Thor TL’s and it did get “lost” in this large room and although it worked really hard the room was just too big. Switching back to the Peerless 10” XLS - whoosh the bass suddenly appeared. When it comes to bass size really does matter?

Back to the CAOW1’s - I’m guessing those that have built Dennis’s design might say in a small room these speakers probably don’t need a sub and to a large extent I’d agree. Which was why I build this version as they go quite low on there own. But I swap them out occasionally when I’m playing with small full range speakers where the bass is needed and the Cerberus performs great.
